The Town of Qualicum Beach Fire Department is accepting applications thoughtout the year.

The Fire and Rescue Service is a very diverse and challenging endeavor. However, it is not for everyone. The following information will introduce you to the job of the modern firefighter. The Qualicum Beach Fire Department provides professional service from a membership of highly trained and motivated male and female firefighters. The commitment is extensive and so can be the rewards. Why Become a Volunteer Firefighter?

 

There are many reasons for becoming a Volunteer Firefighter. Being a firefighter is a satisfying and rewarding experience. Friendship and camaraderie are a big part of being a part of our department. One of the biggest benefits of becoming a volunteer firefighter is the enormous amount of training provided.

Training provided to the firefighters is not just applicable to firefighting. It is useful in all aspects of a person’s life, including other occupations and home life.

 

Some of the training offered to volunteer firefighters includes:
Firefighting Skills WHIMIS
Defensive Driving First Aid
Fire Prevention Fire Extinguishers
Power Tool Operation Fire Investigation
Confined Space Rescue Leadership

Duties and Expectations of a Volunteer Firefighter

 

Training:

As a member of the department, volunteer firefighters are expected to report for regular training or special training sessions as often as possible and will be expected to meet the department's attendance requirements of 75%. Regular drill nights are on Thursday evenings between 7-9 pm. Special practices will involve live fire and driving scheduled on some weekends.

Responding to Calls:

When available, members may be called upon to provide the following services to the community:

Structural, Vehicle and Interface Firefighting
Vehicle and Technical Rescue
Airport Crash Fire Rescue
Assisting the British Columbia Ambulance Service
Responding to Hazardous Materials Incidents.

 

Requirements:

The following are the base requirements for new members;

  1. Grade 12
  2. Valid Driver's Licence
  3. Good Driving Record
  4. No criminal convictions affecting public trust
  5. Good Physical and mental health
  6. 16 - 19 years of age for junior members
  7. 19 years or older for regular members
  8. Availability to attend training sessions
